SUMMARY:Who will tell the stories?
DESCRIPTION:The Future of Our Family History Archives and Physical Collections\nHear from our expert speakers \nPresenter:\nFiona Brooker (NZ)\nPreserving collections: What to keep & what to let go. \nFamily historians often spend decades building collections of research notes\, photographs\, heirlooms\, certificates\, digital files\, and family stories\, but few stop to consider what will happen to these materials in the future. In this thought-provoking and practical presentation\, professional genealogist Fiona Brooker explores the growing challenge of personal family archives and the realities of preserving collections in an era of limited space\, changing technology\, and varying family interest. The session introduces The Family Archive Guide\, a practical framework designed to help future family members\, researchers\, or institutions better understand what a collection contains\, why it matters\, and how it can be navigated and used in the future. \n  \nPresenter:\nRobyn Hamilton (Qld)\nWhat State Library of Queensland collects\, why\, and alternatives \nAs the Lead of Collection Building and Interpretation at the State Library of QLD\, Robyn will provide information on what SLQ does\, and doesn’t collect\, and why\, and will also give some other suggestions for where personal items of historic interest can be deposited. \n  \n  \nPresenter:\nLaura Stedman (Vic)\nCurating\, telling stories & digitising for the future \nThis presentation explores the material culture of ancestry — the objects\, artefacts\, heirlooms and even the so‑called “junk” passed down through generations. Laura examines how these items\, often overlooked or undervalued\, can become powerful sources of family history when we learn to interpret them with care and curiosity.\nThe presentation then turns to practical guidance on the physical care of family objects\, emphasising not only careful preservation but also the importance of use — activating objects through engagement rather than leaving them dormant.\nFinally\, Laura will explore digital collecting and sharing options for your material culture. She will discuss platforms such as eHive and WeAre.xyz\, and reflect on how they meet the needs of contemporary family historians seeking to preserve and share their collections. \n\nSaturday 24 October 2026 – 1:00pm – 5:00pm – Via Zoom\nTickets:\nGSQ Members/ Affiliate and Corporate plus QFHS members $50\nNon Members $60\nThe session will be recorded and made available to registrants for the next 4 weeks to view again.\nThe Zoom link is included in your ticket\, please retain for use on the day. \n  \nRaffle Tickets:\n$2.00 each\, or 3 for $5.00\nTickets are available online or at GSQ Resource Centre.\nTicket sales will close Friday 23rd October 2026 at 13.00pm and will be drawn Saturday 24th October 2026 during the Seminar and winners will be notified by email. \nFirst Prize: MyHeritage Complete Plan\, 12 month subscription – Value $369\n \n  \nSecond Prize: WeAre.xyz Archiver\, 12 month subscription – Value $89 \n \n  \n  \n
