She is also a Research Assistant at Griffith University’s Harry Gentle Resource Centre contributing to a biographical dictionary of Queensland’s early colonial residents. Jan’s publications include ‘Out of sight\, out of mind: Ex-convict female paupers incarcerated in Queensland’s benevolent asylums’ in the Journal of Australian Colonial History (Vol. 24\, 2022)\, available to download (open access) via this link: https://blog.une.edu.au/convicthistory/2022/11/18/publications/ \n  \nHelen Connor:\nPassionate about history and addicted to family history\, Helen has researched her family in Australia\, New Zealand\, Ireland\, England\, Scotland\, and Barbados for over thirty years.Helen strongly believes that family history societies\, like GSQ\, are valuable resources for researching their family history. Helen is very involved in GSQ as being one of the Webcoordinators\, running MTZoom\, FHTech Interest Group and until lately the eNews editor. Helen has completed the Society of Australian Genealogists’ Certificate in Genealogical Research and has completed the University of Tasmania Diploma in Family History. In addition\, she holds a Master’s in Health Policy (by research)\, a Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion\, and a Bachelor of Social Work (Hons). \n  \n  \nSharyn Merkley:\nSharyn Merkley is a family historian with a life-long passion for history. She has researched her family history for over thirty years with an interest in the impact of political\, social and historical events on the lives of ordinary people. After encountering a newspaper article while researching her early Brisbane family\, she became fascinated by the victims of the 1864 Brisbane fire. In 2017\, she published “Brisbane Burns: How the great fires of 1864 shaped a city and its people.” She has also contributed articles to the Genealogical Society of Queensland’s blog\, and magazine\, Generation. As a researcher for the Genealogical Society of Queensland\, she has assisted with indexing projects such as the Wheeler Index\, which compiled information on the lives of over 2\,500 World War 1 soldiers\, and the Waterloo Index\, which lists soldiers involved in the Battle of Waterloo who later settled in Australia. Consequently\, she has a continuing interest in Australian military history and its impact on families. As a volunteer with the Queensland Women’s Historical Association archives team Sharyn collects and researches women’s stories\, concentrating on women without descendants. Determined to give forgotten women a voice\, she uses modern family history techniques to write them back into history. After careers in computer programming and primary education\, Sharyn has also completed a Diploma of Family History. Among her current interests are the stories of the women involved in the early years of aviation in Queensland. \n  \nPauline Williams:\nPauline Williams has been researching her family history for almost 40 years. Her research has primarily been in England\, with links on her maternal line to Wales\, America\, and Norway. She has undertaken numerous research projects across a wide range of topics. As a life member of the Genealogical Society of Queensland (GSQ)\, Pauline has filled a variety of roles including convenor of the GSQ Writing Group since 2011. She was editor of the quarterly journal Generation for several years and joint editor of Queenslanders: Pioneer families 1859-1901\, published by GSQ in 2009. The author of many articles\, Pauline is a frequent blogger for GSQ as well as a regular presenter of courses at GSQ\, Brisbane City Council Libraries\, and elsewhere. Pauline holds a Bachelor of Arts\, Master of Public Administration\, and Graduate Certificate in Arts (Writing\, Editing and Publishing) from The University of Queensland. \n  \nAilsa Corlett:\nAilsa has always been interested in family history\, starting in 1989 after a trip to Central Otago\, New Zealand and seeing photos and dresses of her Paternal Gt Gt Grandparents in the Cromwell Museum. Being the eldest grandchild\, her grandmother also told her stories\, and she inherited many of those wonderful little trinkets that get handed down.\nWorked as a professional genealogist in the 1990’s specialising in NZ research for Australians. She was accredited under AAGRA. Now retired has become very involved with GSQ\, is one of the Webcoordinators\, the Monday Morning Zoom\, the FHTech Interest Group and on the GSQ Management Committee. Very interested in Scottish research with having 70% Scottish DNA due to 3 of her Grandparents coming from Scotland. DESCRIPTION:Building the family story: maps and plans – insights into the history of our suburbs\, streets\, and homes.\nMaps and plans which help build the family story and provide insights into where and how the family lived. Early maps showing first owners\, real estate maps and housing plans can tell us more than we may realise about earlier generations. \n  \nPresenter:\nStephanie Ryan\nOriginally a high school teacher and teacher-librarian Stephanie Ryan joined the public library service in 1996. Her research has focused on the origins of Queenslanders\, their paths to Australia\, their experiences where they settled and their local communities. This has led her to indexing and research projects\, as well as presentations shedding light on their stories. It has made her aware of the diversity of Queensland\, a place distinguished by having its capital city in the south-east corner of the State. It is approximately 2½ thousand kilometres from Brisbane to the tip of Queensland and 13 hundred kilometres from Brisbane to Cameron Corner where the borders of Queensland\, the Northern Territory and South Australia meet. A significant part of her job is appreciating the differences this makes for those outside Brisbane and the ribbon development near it. This presentation is an attempt to show the history of a part of the State of which many would not be conscious much less realise its astonishing background and how it has come to terms with it. This story is part of a patchwork of surprising tales of scattered small towns across long distances which prosper\, fail or transform\, sometimes dramatically\, without many Queenslanders\, Australians or others being aware of it. DESCRIPTION:When researching our family history\, we sometimes come across characters whose lives may not have proven as pure as the driven snow. How do we report these incidents? Indeed\, should we include these aspects at all? What ethics should be considered? On Saturday\, 8 August\, 2026\, fellow members Dr Dot Wickham\, Dr Deborah Prior and patron Dr Jennifer Harrison who have encountered similar problems with their academic research will discuss ‘black sheep’. Dot has published widely on subjects associated with prostitution on the goldfields\, Deborah on health matters and Jennifer on transported convicts who broke laws of the land. All are well aware of many who maintained socially unacceptable habits by continuing their behaviors over many years and locations. These ‘offenders’ all were someone’s son\, daughter\, brother\, sister\, husband\, wife or distant relative. We are not delegated to judge our ancestors but can report events as accurately\, and\, as compassionately as we can. We will also consider moral authority as imposed by dispassionate officials including rehabilitation and reformation attempts set against prescribed punishment regimes. Attention will be drawn to subjects like sexuality\, illegitimacy\, bigamy\, perjury\, and institutionalization set against poverty\, loneliness and dire economic conditions. Why get involved? Present and future generations might seriously be affected by medical and/or social outcomes. Let us not shame and blame these family members but claim and tame them with acceptance\, discretion and kindness. \n  \nPresenter:\nDr Jennifer Harrison.\nDr Jennifer Harrison is a research adviser with the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at The University of Queensland.  Her experience over a generation as Queensland Researcher for the Australian Dictionary of Biography at the Australian National University reinforced her fascination for the people element within family and local history.  She has written the Australian Notebook column for Irish Roots since its inception in 1992 and lectured and published widely on Irish-Australian immigrants – convicts and settlers. While Jennifer currently is caught up in marking the two hundredth anniversary of establishment of the penal colony at Moreton Bay and the genesis of Brisbane Town\, she continues to enjoy her role as patron of the Genealogical Society of Queensland. \n  \nPresenter:\nDr Dot Wickham\nIs a Director of Ballarat Heritage Services\, educator\, author and historian. In 2003 Dorothy completed a Master of Philosophy about the Ballarat Female refuge (1867-1921) and in 2008 a PhD\, “Women of the Ballarat Goldfield 1851-1871: A Case Study in Agency”. She is a member of the Professional Historians’ Associate (Vic & Tas) (Qld) and a visiting fellow at the Harry Gentle Resource Centre\, Griffith University (Qld).\nDorothy has overseen many diverse projects and collaborative efforts\, including consultancies with local councils\, historical groups\, educational research projects and universities. She has written\, designed\, publish and co-authored many books and book chapters\, including The Eureka Encyclopaedia\, the overall winner of the 2005 Victorian Community History Awards and Women of the Diggings: Ballarat 1854\, commended in 2010. She has also assisted in the creation and maintenance of the Eurekapedia Wiki. \n  \nPresenter:\nDr Deborah Prior\nDeborah began her career as a registered nurse. She entered the academic arena in 1985 teaching undergrad and postgrad nursing students. Her specialist subjects were population health\, oncology-palliative care and Indigenous health matters. Guest speakers will be invited from time to time.\nmembers are invited to submit pieces of writing for comment and suggestions by other members.\n\n\n\n\nMeetings: Meetings are held on the 3rd Sunday of even months of the year\, unless otherwise advertised. Via ZOOM. \n2026: 15th Feb; 19th April; 21st June; 16th Aug; 18th Oct. \nThe Writing Group was formed in 2012 and grew out of two education sessions presented in 2011. We meet five times per year except December. From our beginnings as a small cohort of 10 members to a regular attendance of between 20-30\, the group’s activities have also evolved. \nAs at June 2021 our meetings are held virtually via Zoom from 10am to 12 noon. It is hoped that we can have a mix of Zoom and face-to-face meetings in the future to provide members with the opportunity to do some personal research as well as engage with other members over morning tea and lunch\, as well as meet the needs of those members who do not use Zoom. \nThe format for the meeting varies depending on the main topic to be discussed. Regular features include short practice sessions on a random topic; review of writing submitted by members in advance; an opportunity for members to share their achievements. Main topics we have covered include grammar\, writing and style\, evidence and proof\, citation and referencing\, copyright\, different formats and structures for family histories\, and many more. We have had guest speakers from time to time. \nMembers are encouraged to share their writing as group members may be able to provide suggestions for enhancing the style\, format\, etc. All comments are constructive\, and the writer has discretion on whether to accept them or not. It does help\, however\, to have input from those not connected with a story. \nGroup members are at different stages of their writing; some are published authors\, whereas others are just beginning. It is exciting to note that most of the winners of the Joan Reese Memorial Short Story Competition are members of the Writing Group. DESCRIPTION:Journeys that shaped our history\nA full afternoon of expert talks exploring the stories behind the journeys of our ancestors.\nMINI SEMINAR from 1PM – 5PM\, Saturday 5 September 2026 via Zoom\n  \nCome and listen to: \nEmeritus Professor Philip Payton – Historian\nCornish Immigration – The Cornish journey: reasons\, routes and resilience.\nDiscover how Cornwall became an “emigration culture” and why so many Cornish men and women made new lives in the Australian colonies. In this talk\, historian Philip Payton draws on his landmark study The Cornish Overseas to follow families from the mines and parishes of Cornwall to copper towns such as Moonta and Kadina\, the goldfields\, and beyond\, highlighting the records and research strategies that can help today’s family historians trace their Cornish ancestors in Australia. \n \nEmeritus Prof Philip Payton is a British-Australian historian and one of the leading scholars of modern Cornish history and the Cornish diaspora. Emeritus Professor of Cornish & Australian Studies at the University of Exeter and Professor of History at Flinders University\, his many books include Cornwall: A History and The Cornish Overseas: A History of Cornwall’s Great Emigration. \n  \nDr Jennifer Harrison\nSurgeon’s and Passenger Diaries – First-hand accounts: insights from surgeon’s and passenger diaries. \n  \n \nDr Jennifer Harrison is a research adviser with the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at The University of Queensland.  Her experience over a generation as Queensland Researcher for the Australian Dictionary of Biography at the Australian National University reinforced her fascination for the people element within family and local history.  She has written the Australian Notebook column for Irish Roots since its inception in 1992 and lectured and published widely on Irish-Australian immigrants – convicts and settlers. While Jennifer currently is caught up in marking the two hundredth anniversary of establishment of the penal colony at Moreton Bay and the genesis of Brisbane Town\, she continues to enjoy her role as patron of the Genealogical Society of Queensland. \n  \nDr Dot Wickham\nEarly Moreton Bay ships – The vessels that connected Moreton Bay to the world. \n  \n \nDr Dorothy Wickham is a Director of Ballarat Heritage Services\, educator\, author and historian. In 2003 Dorothy completed a Master of Philosophy about the Ballarat Female refuge (1867-1921) and in 2008 a PhD\, “Women of the Ballarat Goldfields 1851-1871: A Case Study in Agency”. She is a member of the Professional Historians’ Association (Vic & Tas) (Qld) and a visiting fellow at the Harry Gentle Resource Centre\, Griffith University (Qld). Dorothy has overseen many diverse projects and collaborative efforts\, including consultancies with local councils\, historical groups\, educational research projects and universities. She has written\, designed\, published and co-authored many books and book chapters\, including The Eureka Encyclopaedia\, the overall winner of the 2005 Victorian Community History Awards and Women of the Diggings: Ballarat 1854\, commended in 2010. She has also assisted in the creation and maintenance of the Eurekapedia Wiki. \n  \nDr Janet Few\nEmigration to the UK from the 13th to the 18th Centuries – Exploring centuries of movement\, motives and destinations.\nThis presentation looks at the background history to immigration into England over 700 years. General records of immigration are considered\, as well as looking in more details at the immigration of members of the Roma and Traveller Communities\, those of the Jewish father and Huguenots. Sources available to trace these groups will be discussed. Finally\, the session looks at the impact of immigration on both the immigrants themselves and the communities where they settled. \n \nDr Janet Few is a British family\, social and community historian\, author and experienced lecturer who has presented throughout the English-speaking world and at sea. Carpe diem and join Sue Reid to learn some simple Latin for family historians. Discover some exciting new tools to help you translate from Latin to English. \n  \nPresenter:\nSue Reid\nSue Reid’s family history journey was inspired when a cousin gave her a copy of a diary written by an ancestor who was a missionary in Russia in the early nineteenth century. Sue has presented at family history conferences and seminars\, including the four most recent Australasian Congresses on Genealogy and Heraldry\, the State Library of Queensland\, and the National Archives of Australia. She is the author of articles on family history published in local and overseas family history journals and other publications. She has recently published a family history\, The issue of gentlemen. This book was placed second in the 2021 Alexander Henderson Award. In 2022\, Sue was awarded the Society of Australian Genealogists’ Certificate in Genealogical Research. A Fellow of the Queensland Family History Society\, she convenes the QFHS Family History Writing Group and was the Chair of the QFHS Education Sub-Committee for ten years. DESCRIPTION:The FHTech Interest Group\n  \nAims: \n\nTo assist GSQ members with increasing their knowledge and skills in using technology which can assist with their Genealogical research.\nMake members comfortable with Genealogical advancements that are happening in the world.\n\nMeetings: Meetings are held on the 2nd Sunday of odd months of the year\, unless otherwise advertised. Via ZOOM. \n\n2026: 8th March; 10th May; 12th July; 13th Sept; 8th Nov. \nThe meeting commences at 10:00 am until 12:00 noon and generally consists of updates which have occurred\, anything New; a Presentation and then Discussion on the presentation and problems to be solved. \nThis group gives opportunities to look at many other technologies that may help you in relation to recording\, preserving\, and looking at various technology to help you with your family history. \nWe like to look at and discuss \n\nFile management and storage\nVarious Software Programs especially ones to use with family history\nHelp in relation to the many Genealogical Website usage.\nCommon Windows/PC or Mac problems.\nWork together as a group to help others overcome issues and also to swap ideas which can assist others.\n\nIf you are not a member of GSQ yet\, you can come along for 2 meetings before needing to join.
