Preserving collections: What to keep & what to let go.
Family historians often spend decades building collections of research notes, photographs, heirlooms, certificates, digital files, and family stories, but few stop to consider what will happen to these materials in the future. In this thought-provoking and practical presentation, professional genealogist Fiona Brooker explores the growing challenge of personal family archives and the realities of preserving collections in an era of limited space, changing technology, and varying family interest. The session introduces The Family Archive Guide, a practical framework designed to help future family members, researchers, or institutions better understand what a collection contains, why it matters, and how it can be navigated and used in the future.

What State Library of Queensland collects, why, and alternatives
As the Lead of Collection Building and Interpretation at the State Library of QLD, Robyn will provide information on what SLQ does, and doesn’t collect, and why, and will also give some other suggestions for where personal items of historic interest can be deposited.

Laura Stedman (Vic)
Curating, telling stories & digitising for the future
This presentation explores the material culture of ancestry — the objects, artefacts, heirlooms and even the so‑called “junk” passed down through generations. Laura examines how these items, often overlooked or undervalued, can become powerful sources of family history when we learn to interpret them with care and curiosity.
The presentation then turns to practical guidance on the physical care of family objects, emphasising not only careful preservation but also the importance of use — activating objects through engagement rather than leaving them dormant.
Finally, Laura will explore digital collecting and sharing options for your material culture. She will discuss platforms such as eHive and WeAre.xyz, and reflect on how they meet the needs of contemporary family historians seeking to preserve and share their collections.

If you are a GSQ member you need to Sign In to purchase a ticket.
If you are a QFHS member, an Affiliate or Corporate of GSQ, you must enter the code you have obtained from your secretary into the requested area in order to purchase tickets.
