GSQ SUBSCRIPTION DATABASES

As a valued member of the Genealogical Society of Queensland (GSQ), you have access to a wide range of subscription databases, both at the GSQ Resource Centre and through the Members’ Area of the GSQ website.

These powerful tools open the door to millions of family history records from around the world, helping you trace ancestors, explore original documents, and uncover stories that bring your family’s past to life.

Subscription Databases Available at the Resource Centre

When you visit the GSQ Resource Centre, you can use the following premium websites free of charge on any GSQ computer:

Ancestry: GSQ holds an institutional subscription to Ancestry.com. Members can search historical records, view images, and access international databases covering births, deaths, marriages, censuses, immigration, and more.

Findmypast: Enjoy access to Findmypast World Edition, which offers extensive records from the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Available on all GSQ computers.

MyHeritage: GSQ provides access to the Library Edition PremiumPlus, both at the Resource Centre and online via the Members’ Area. Ideal for building trees, exploring matches, and discovering records worldwide.

British Newspaper Archive: Explore historical newspapers published in the UK since 1800, some even earlier! Browse online from home, then visit the GSQ Resource Centre to view, print, or copy articles in full.

The Genealogist: GSQ offers members the Diamond Edition, available both in the Resource Centre and via the Members’ Area, which allows users to search census records, parish registers, and detailed maps of family locations.

RootsIreland: A key database for Irish family researchers, RootsIreland provides transcriptions of parish registers and other vital records. Access it both in the Resource Centre and through the Members’ Area.

Biographical Database of Australia (BDA): The BDA combines transcripts and indexes from many original records and published biographies of deceased individuals who arrived in or were born in Australia. Available in the Resource Centre.

Irish Ancestors by John Grenham: A must-visit site for anyone with Irish heritage. Irish Ancestors focuses on Irish surnames, places, and sources, helping you trace families by county, parish, or townland. Available both at the GSQ Resource Centre and in the Members’ Area.

Subscription Sites Available from Home

Through the Members’ Area, GSQ members can also enjoy access to selected databases from home, including:

MyHeritage
The Genealogist
RootsIreland
Irish Ancestors (John Grenham)

GSQ Tip: Log in to the Members’ Area on the GSQ website to find the Subscription Sites link and start researching right away!

Additional Online Resources

At the GSQ Resource Centre, you’ll also find links to many excellent genealogy websites that don’t require a paid subscription. Some sites may ask you to create a free login, buy credits, or pay a small fee for copies of certificates.

FamilySearch (LDS Affiliate Access)

Although FamilySearch is free to use, GSQ is proud to be an Affiliated Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). This means that, when visiting the Resource Centre, GSQ members can view digitised films and records that are usually restricted to LDS Family History Centres.

These include:

Parish registers and church records
Census and immigration documents
Wills, land records, and more

Note: These restricted-access records can only be viewed on computers within the GSQ Resource Centre and are not available remotely.

In Summary

Your GSQ membership opens up a world of genealogical discovery, from global databases like Ancestry and Findmypast to specialised resources such as RootsIreland and the BDA. Whether you’re researching at home or visiting the Resource Centre, GSQ gives you the tools and support to take your family history further.

GSQ encouragement: Each record you find is another piece of your family’s story, so start exploring today!
