RESEARCH SERVICES
Experienced Volunteer Researchers can undertake 2 different types of
Research for both members & non-members:
a Simple Record Search and Extended Research.
Simple Record Search
Useful if you have identifying or reference details for one or more items & would like to obtain an image or transcription of the item(s). These searches are undertaken only within the collections & databases accessible specifically at GSQ. Our Library Catalogue at https://catalogue.gsq.org.au/ lists all our holdings.
Members should check the Member’s Area first for Index references; also, some of the Funerals Director’s Records include uploaded images.
Details of the extent of the Roman Catholic Parish Registers can be found here: GSQ RC Parish Register List.
Details of the records & information found in the Funerals Director’s database can be found here: GSQ Funeral Director's List.
All requests for this service should be made by completing the Simple Record Search Req Fillable Form or Simple Record Search Req Printable Form then emailing it to researchconvenor@gsq.org.au.
Turn around time is 2 – 3 weeks and results are emailed back to you.
Examples of Simple Record Searches are:
- An image or pages from a book or an article in a journal
- Baptism, marriage or burial entry in the Roman Catholic Parish Registers (transcripts only supplied)
- Funeral Director’s Records (images only supplied).
- Cemetery Demolition Indexes (Toowong & South Brisbane)
- Queensland Muster Roll
- Locked records from Family Search – GSQ is a library affiliate & has access to these records
- Items referencing GSQ indexes or publications listed on subscription websites (Ancestry, FindMyPast, MyHeritage).
- Any other items held at GSQ.
If you require multiple items of this type (e.g. for a one-name or family group study), please contact the Research Convenor at researchconvenor@gsq.org.au for further information.

Extended Search
Our Volunteer Researchers can undertake comprehensive projects with complex requirements for members, non-members & other entities such as Law Firms & the Public Trustee.
All finished projects are presented in a report format with images (if applicable) & appropriate referencing. Graphical Family trees or Relationship charts can be included, if required.
All requests for this service should be made by completing the Research Request Fillable Form or Research Request Printable Form then emailing it to researchconvenor@gsq.org.au.
The GSQ Research Convenor will confirm with you: the scope of the proposed research, research already undertaken & the amount of time to be spent on the project.
Turn around time is 3 – 4 weeks, but may take longer for more complex research, particularly if additional certificates or documents are required.
Examples of Research Requests are:
- Was my great grandmother French?
- What happened to the family of Joe Bloggs after he died in 1890 in Townsville?
- Trace the ancestors of Patrick Murphy & Honora Shea who married in 1857 in Dublin, Ireland, as much as is possible, with an emphasis on ancestral locations.
- Trace the Beneficiaries of the estate of Brenda Mason who died in Edinburgh in 2020.

- How are John James Robertson (b. 1860 in Glasgow) and William McIntyre Robertson (b. 1872 in Sydney) related? When did J J Robertson come to Australia?

Cost:
The following Costs do not include the purchase of any external documents – e.g. Birth, Marriage or Death certificates, probate files, wills etc. – required to accurately complete the Research. If this is the case, the client will be notified prior to any such purchases, to decide if the client wishes to go ahead.
