YOUR GUIDE TO OUR RESOURCE CENTRE AND MEMBERS' AREA

GSQ Resource Centre – How to Use Our Facilities

Welcome to the heart of GSQ’s family history community!

The Genealogical Society of Queensland (GSQ) Resource Centre is open to all members and visitors who want to explore our unique collections, records, and research tools. We want your visit to be enjoyable and productive, so please take a moment to read these simple guidelines to help everyone share the space respectfully.

General Use of the Resource Centre

All financial members of GSQ have full use of the Resource Centre. To make the experience pleasant for everyone, please follow these few common-sense rules:

  • All members and visitors are required to sign in and out upon arrival and departure. Members, please include your membership number.
  • Switch mobile phones to silent or mute mode while in the Centre.
  • No smoking anywhere inside the building.
You’re welcome to bring your own food and drink. Kitchen facilities are available for use on the day of your visit. Tea and coffee are provided for a small fee.

GSQ Tip: Enjoy your break, but please keep food and drinks away from library materials and computers.

Conduct in the Resource Centre
Handle all books and materials carefully. Nothing may be removed from the building. Our volunteers are here to assist you in using the collections, but researchers are encouraged to conduct their own research. Volunteers cannot undertake complete research projects on behalf of visitors.

Reminder: GSQ is a community built on shared learning. Asking for guidance is welcome, but discovery is part of the fun!

Non-Member Access
Visitors are very welcome to use the Resource Centre. A day visit fee of $20.00 applies. If you decide to join GSQ that day, the fee will be deducted from your membership subscription. Members of interstate family history societies with reciprocal rights are entitled to full use of the library on presentation of a current membership card.

Did you know? Becoming a GSQ member gives you unlimited access to our Centre, databases, and community of researchers.

What is in the Member’s Area

Explore GSQ's unique collections and discover Queensland's rich family history.

The Genealogical Society of Queensland (GSQ) maintains a diverse collection of unique indexes and record sets that continue to expand over time. Most of these indexes are available exclusively to GSQ members through the Members' Area portal once logged in. Members can also view the interest areas of other researchers and connect with those studying similar families or localities.

Below is an overview of the key indexes and projects currently included in the Members' Area.

Funeral Directors' Records Index

Includes records from several Queensland funeral directors, as well as memorial inscriptions and lone graves. This index can help identify burial places and family connections not found elsewhere.

Cemetery Demolition Indexes

In 1975, hundreds of old and damaged headstones were removed from three major Brisbane cemeteries under the Regional Employment Development Scheme. Two of these cemeteries were Toowong and South Brisbane. These indexes preserve the details of those headstones and ensure this information remains accessible.

A valuable record of lost memorials that would otherwise have disappeared forever.

Pedigree Charts Index

Members, past and present, have donated their five-generation pedigree charts to GSQ over the course of many years. These charts can be viewed at the GSQ Resource Centre during opening hours. They provide ready-made links to other family researchers and can save you valuable research time.

Family Tree Charts

Created to acknowledge members who contributed their charts to GSQ for safekeeping, this index lists those family trees and the surnames included. Charts are available for viewing by members at the Resource Centre.

Unrelated Certificates Index

Many members have obtained certificates that turned out to be unrelated to their own family research. Rather than discard them, they lodged these with GSQ so others might find them helpful.

You never know – someone else's 'unrelated' certificate might solve your mystery!

Queensland Muster Roll

Created as a Bicentennial project in 1988 and updated during the Q150 project in 2009, this major GSQ index contains details of over 25,000 pioneers who lived in Queensland between 1859 and 1901. The register includes birth and family details, occupations, businesses, properties, death information, and the names of spouses and children.

Wheeler Project

This ongoing project transcribes World War I index cards compiled by Annie Margaret Wheeler (née Laurie), known as 'Mother of the Queenslanders'. Annie cared for Australian soldiers in London and was awarded an OBE in 1919. GSQ volunteers are continuing to add these records online.

Queensland Communal Settlers

Between 1893 and 1896, around 2,000 people joined government-sponsored communal settlements under the Co-operative Communities Land Settlement Act of 1893. Groups of 30 or more men were granted land to farm together under specific conditions. Twelve groups formed, most of them family-based.

Queensland Methodist Times

The Methodist Times was the official newspaper of the Queensland Methodist Church Synod. This index contains images and information primarily from the 1965–1969 editions, making it valuable for those researching Methodist families or church involvement.

GSQ GIF Project

From 2014 to 2017, GSQ volunteers digitised approximately 180,000 general index cards to create a searchable online index. The General Index File (GIF) contains references to people, places, and events, making it one of GSQ's most extensive resources accessible to members through the Members' Area.

Members' Interest Areas

Members can now submit their surnames and research locations of interest through the Members' Area.  An email address must be included so others researching the same names or areas can make contact and share information.

Connecting members with shared ancestry is one of the most rewarding aspects of belonging to GSQ.

Need Help?

If you experience any difficulties using the Members' Area, please don't hesitate to contact the GSQ Web Coordinators for assistance.

The Members' Area is not the Society's general membership database. It holds data contributed for research purposes and may be updated or removed at any time.
